EPA moves toward regulating carbon dioxide

Bleached coral like this specimen are becoming more common as sea temperatures warm. Experts say carbon dioxide absorbed by oceans is adding additional stress to coral and other organisms by making the water more acidic.The Obama administration took another step toward regulating carbon dioxide, issuing a notice Tuesday that the EPA will review whether those emissions should fall under the Clean Water Act.

Unchecked emissions of greenhouse gases would create a much warmer world, according to a new computer analysis showing average surface temperature projections for the end of the century (left). The map at right projects temperature changes if emissions are cut by 70 percent. The numbers on the bar show changes in Celsius compared with today's average temperatures.Temperatures will rise no matter how much global warming emissions are curbed but catastrophic impacts can still be avoided if gases are cut by 70 percent, a new computer analysis projects.
